English circa 1840, silver and gilt threads on raised work applied to a silk ground.
This sumptuous embroidered panel intended for court use would have been produced by the professional Broderers’ Guild. The raised work is achieved by padding with heavy cords with the gilt and silver threads couched on top which almost gives the effect of carving. The eyes including those of the pair of cherubs above are applied glass beads. The latter with their palms of peace appear to be auxiliary supporters to the crown whilst both lion and unicorn are balancing on the scroll bearing the words ‘Dieu et mon droit’. The motto of the Order of the Garter encircles the central shield with the royal arms. Both panels are surrounded by foliate needlework simulating a picture frame.
The initials ‘V R’ are worked in cord and applied to denote 'Victoria Regina'
